Laptop Keyboard Is Typing the Wrong Keys
If you enter the wrong characters on
your laptop keyboard, it may be that the keyboard layout problem and easy to
fix, or the keyboard has more serious mechanical problems. Performing a simple
test will help you find out why your laptop is in wrong responding.
Most laptop keyboards - unless you
have a laptop with a very wide size - there is no separate numeric keypad like
a desktop keyboard. Instead, some of the letter keys on the right side of the
keyboard can be used as a numeric keypad. When you press the "Num
Lock" button, pressing their small number keys will type numbers when you
press them instead of the letters they usually type. You can fix this by
pressing "Num Lock" again. The "Num Lock" light on the
laptop above the keyboard should go out and the button should be typed again.
Keyboard
layout
Most laptops in the United States use
a standard QWERTY keyboard layout. However, there are other ways to arrange
keys on the keyboard, including Dvorak layouts for faster typing or layouts for
special characters with different languages. If your laptop keyboard doesn't
type the correct keys, you may inadvertently change the keyboard layout so that
your laptop's keyboard mapping does not match the letters on the keys. To work
around this issue, click the “Start” button, type "intl.cpl" in the
Search box, and press Enter.
Click Change Keyboard on the Keyboard
and Languages tab. Choose the correct keyboard layout and click View Layout
to make sure it matches your physical keyboard.
Cleaning the
keyboard
Damage to dust, dirt, or liquids as
you type may cause the laptop keyboard
to respond incorrectly. To clean dust or dirt on the keyboard, use compressed
air to spray between the keys. If you have a sugary drink or other sticky spill
under the key, carefully open the key and clean it with a damp cotton ball.
Laptop keys can be difficult to reopen, so check your laptop's manual for help.
Using the
onscreen keyboard
1. Click the "Start" button
in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. Click All Programs, then move your
mouse to Attachments, click Accessibility, and then click Screen Keyboard. If
you are using Vista or a later operating system, you can type "on-screen
keyboard" in the search function and then click the program when it
appears.
External
keyboard test
If the above solutions do not work,
you may experience problems inside the laptop keyboard. You can test by
plugging an external USB keyboard into your computer. Open a text editor (such
as Notepad) and type on the external
keyboard to see if the keys are typed correctly. If they do, there may be
mechanical problems with your laptop keyboard. Use an external keyboard for
typing until you can replace the keyboard on your laptop.
